Note:
Guido Pistocchi, veteran Italian trumpeter and member of the acclaimed group Idee 6, has assembled a quintet for this outing on the highly consistent Norma Blu imprint. The aim of this project is to pay tribute to and raise awareness of the West Coast Italo-American jazz scene of the fifties and sixties.
As we've come to expect from this series, the production is superb and with the HQ-CD format the sound reproduction is such you could almost be forgiven for thinking that the musicians were performing in your living room. Pistocchi leads him band with some beautiful trumpet work complemented by Max Ionata on tenor, and on three tracks the band are joined by a young Italian jazz vocal talent in the form of Walter Ricci.
For the most part the tracks featured here are covers of tunes from the West Coast scene, and the mood is definitely more late night jazz club than urban club jazz, and that is certainly no bad thing. The rhythm section is tight and yet understated in true West Coast style, allowing trumpet, tenor and piano to weave their magic over the top. The versions of Zizanie and Macedonia, both Conte Candoli compositions, and the new arrangement of Lover Man with Ricci on vocals are probably the pick of the tracks on offer here on what is another solid production from Paolo Scotti.
