Pressmission Line Up: Max Ionata: sax Roberto Tarenzi: piano Dario Rosciglione: double bass Marcello di Leonardo: drums Note: Revised, updated and in some cases even recomposed, very noted classic songs that have been accomplished with an ability that not only concentrates on a classic timbre level but also on a jazz one. A complete musical sensibility that has one main important role model: John Coltrane. Night Walk is the work of an original quartet that includes Max Ionata on Sax, Roberto Tarenzi on Piano, Dario Rosciglione on Double Bass and Marcello Di Leonardo on Drums. We should underline once again the greatness and versatility of this saxophonist who rides worthily on the tail of John Coltrane and occupies, without a doubt, a leading role in Italian Modern Jazz history. The compositions are simple and direct and the music develops through Sax and melodic Piano solos that make up a refined harmonic game. The result is, for many aspects, frighteningly good for the equilibrium that there is between traditional values and research aspects that push things forward into exploring the most extreme technique possibilities of each instrument without becoming just another futile experiment. One of the most fascinating aspects is the contrast between melodic lines performed on the highest scale of the instrument with others on the medium or low scales: it is so refined that it is very easy to imagine a Modal Jazz quartet. Every theme is thus characterised by an explicit reference to a maestro of the instrument. One of the most readable is 'Greensleeves' that evokes the melodic fragrance of the style of the great Coltrane as well as 'Boom Jackie Boom Chick' of Paul Gonsalves that unwinds into an exemplary journey into Brazilian Jazz. A style that is faithful to the main characteristics of its aesthetics that remain forever actual for the freshness of its unfolding story, always prismatic and rich in colours: in it there finds space the true values of Jazz and Bop along with those of Italian Jazz or Modal Jazz. The thematic material makes up a great compromise between the complex arrangements and the freedom bestowed on each singular element of originality brought together above all through the rich patrimony of Italian tradition. There is a variety of ample references that keep the tension high, one of the elements that characterise this great piece of recording work. The album can be heard in a pleasurable way also because of its lovely solo performances but not only, it also has a beauty within its solutions, something that will be appreciated by every lover of Modern Jazz music.
